Trailbuilding for fire prevention
How Trailbuilding helps prevent forest fires
Each summer we see how forest fires endanger forests, fauna and rural communities. In 2025, Spain has suffered some of the most serious fires of recent decades: the devastating fire of carballedas (Zamora-León), with more than 37,000 calcined hectares, that of Ourense, who razed thousands of hectares in just days, or the claims in Madrid and Valencia, who forced to evict thousands of people. In total, more than 400,000 hectares have been burned in the country, which has become one of the most tragic in our recent history.
Given this panorama, it is more necessary that you never reflect on which tools we have, in addition to traditional firewalls or forest management, to reduce risks. One of them is trailbuilding, construction and maintenance of trails on the mountain.
Trails that stop fire
When a path is opened on the mountain, the continuity of the vegetation is interrupted. These spaces act as small natural barriers that make it more difficult for the flames to move rapidly. They do not replace a firewall, but they do provide "spots of breath" that help curb propagation.
Routes that facilitate the arrival of help
In case of fire, time is key. Thanks to the trails, the extinction teams can access complicated areas faster, take their tools or even evacuate people if necessary. A well-drawn path can make a difference in an emergency as lived this summer in Zamora or Ourense.
Less fuel for fire
When opening or maintaining a path, it is usually released, pruning or cleaning the passage zone. All that dry material that could serve as "gasoline" to fire is reduced. Thus, the trails also contribute to the forests have less vegetable fuel load.
More eyes taking care of the mountain
The trails attract hikers, cyclists and runners who enjoy nature. These people, in addition to using the roads, become spontaneous vigilantes: they can detect smoke columns, poorly turned off or garbage accumulations. The more eyes are attentive, the harder is that a fire goes unnoticed in its first phases.
Order and care of the environment
Having well-designed trails also prevents people from walking anywhere, creating trucks that erode the soil and damage the ecosystem. When ordering the use of natural space, the roads help the mountain be more healthy and balanced, which also makes it more resistant against fire.
In brief
Trailbuilding not only serves to enjoy safe and beautiful mountain routes. It is also a practical fire prevention tool, because it reduces flammable vegetation, improves brigades access, creates small fire barriers and encourages more people to be pending forest health.
In view of what happened in 2025 in Spain, with fires that have devastated hundreds of thousands of hectares, investing in well-designed and maintained trails is also investing in the protection of our mountains and communities.
